Your questions answered: apprenticeships

How long will my apprenticeship last?

Your apprenticeship will last between 12 and 18 months. If you decide to continue from an NVQ 2 to an NVQ 3 your contract will be extended by another year.

Will I get a job after my apprenticeship?

We can not guarantee a job at the end of yor apprenticeship however at West Suffolk we try and keep on as many apprentices as possible after they have completed their qualification, whether in the same area or in a different area of the organisation. In the last 5 years we have managed to retain 35 of our apprentices.

How much will I get paid?

Apprentices will receive approximately £100 per week when paid the national minimum wage. Depending on the company you may get paid more.

With West Suffolk Councils once you have completed 12 months of your apprenticeship your pay will increase to national minimum wage for your age.

How will I get qualifications while working as an apprentice?

You will be assessed by a variety of methods including direct observation, witness testimonies, portfolio evidence and professional discussions. All the assessment will be planned between you and your assessor with the support from your mentor.

Your assessor will meet with you and your manager regularly to:

  • Create a learning/development plan including theoretical and work experience
  • Check on your progress on all aspects of the qualifications you are working towards
  • Ensure your work experience supports your NVQ assignments
  • Ensure your NVQ assignments are complete and submitted on time

Is the NVQ training carried out at college or in the workplace?

The majority of your apprenticeship training is on the job in the workplace and the rest is provided by a training provider locally – either at a college or training venue.
